Itsenäisyyspäivä !

For those who don’t know what that is, or if you don’t remember, this means Independence day in Finnish. Today is even more special, since Finns got their independence 90 years ago.

Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää !

Trip to Lapland and Norway – July 06 – map and pictures

I’ve just added a map with the route we used (not in detail, but it gives an idea) and photos we took during that trip.
Thanks Google for the map and the “start” and “end” flags ;)

Hope you’ll like it !

PS: I’m getting motivated … now I developed most of the tools to make such map generation easier, so you can expect more maps and itineraries to come.

Maps and Itineraries page

I’m preparing a set of maps to help you locate which places I’m talking about, and how this or that area looks like. I started one for Finland and I think it looks nice, but, as one can imagine, there still is a lot of work to do.

Enjoy !

Edit (2007/12/01 03:29): I’ve added few pictures from Helsinki, and another serie for Suomenlinna.
Edit (2007/12/03 02:55): I’ve added few pictures from 5 new cities in Finland. I’m planning to add new maps soon (Norway, Trip to Lapland and Norway, etc.).

Antwerp, Belgium

In Flemish, Antwerpen, in French, Anvers. This city is well known for being one of the biggest harbours in the world. As a matter of facts, it is the second biggest in Europe, after Rotterdam. It has been a very important city for the last five centuries in many ways, and despite the immense destruction suffered over various wars (and especially WWII), the city remains a pillar of trade and industry in the Benelux. It is also the capital of diamonds …
Since it is located in Belgium, you can expect excellent “chocolateries”, and not less good candy stores and biscuit shops.

There are a few historical buildings there, but not that many, since the city has been damaged many times. Unfortunately, that also means that a lot of “modern” ones were built instead.

Since my girlfriend was to spend some time there, I asked her to take some pictures :)
She didn’t find the inhabitants to be very friendly or happy to be there. Even shop owners don’t smile when you enter. You get service, but not joyful faces.

Here are a few photos :

Hello to all of you Belgium people !

Crazy thoughts

First thing. If it hasn’t been removed yet, try to visit this page.

This is right now holding hostages in a high school and has killed at least one person.
I’ve read his text, I’ve tried to understand, but the guys is contradicting himself so much … For example:

“When the gangsters of the corrupted governments have been shot in the streets… When the rule of idiocracy and the democratic system has been replaced with justice… When intelligent people are finally free and rule the society instead of the idiocratic rule of majority… In that great day of deliverance, you will know what I want.”

Ok, I see an idea there. One could even agree that power should go to some sort of experts group (is it technocracy?). But then, why doesn’t he shoot in the Parliament ? why a high school ? is it for this reason:

“I, as a natural selector, will eliminate all who I see unfit, disgraces of human race and failures of natural selection.”

But then again, who is he to judge and on what base can he affirm that this guy here is fit but not that one ??? How can he know that he himself isn’t part of those that are unfit ?

“The system discriminating naturality and justice, is my enemy.”

Discrimination is natural. Fear of what is different is natural. Racism, in a way, is easy to understand, because it lies in people’s instinct. But because we are getting further from our natural state, towards a more civilised state, we have learned that differences should be handled differently.
Anyway, he is promoting natural selection, but not discrimination. And it doesn’t make much sense, since discrimination is natural.

“Don’t blame my parents or my friends. I told nobody about my plans and I always kept them inside my mind only.”

Well, keeping things inside is generally not a good idea. It usually grows out of proportion and … wait, it did.
Plus, it’s kinda hard to have such political discussions only with you and yourself. You usually don’t get much feedback or counter-statement, and therefore, always think you’re right.

“When intelligent people are finally free and rule the society instead of the idiocratic rule of majority”

“It’s time to put NATURAL SELECTION & SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST back on tracks! “

Hum (coughing). Usually, natural selection is not too keen on more clever individuals. How do you promote rule of the most clever, if those probably wouldn’t have survived a natural selection ?

One might say: “there is no point trying to have it make sense, this guy is nuts”, but since he wanted so much to make a statement, I still wanted to dig in there. I hope he doesn’t do too much damage anymore.

Edit: YouTube has suspended the account and removed the webpage. Also, it seems that the guy killed at least 7 people.
