Kinkakuji Temple entrance (correct name is Rukuon-ji temple) |
Kinkakuji is known as "The Golden Pavillon" for obvious reasons. In 1220, it was the villa of Kintsune Saionji. |
The 3 floor are made in different styles: the first floor, called Ho-sui-in is made in the style Shinden-zukuri (palace style) ; the 2nd floor, Cho-on-do, is made in the style Buke-zukuri (samurai house) ; the 3rd floor, Kukkyo-cho, is made in the style Karayo (Zen temple). |
The 2nd and 3rd floor are covered with goldd-leaf on Japanese lacquer. The roof, upon which the Chinese phoenix settles, is thatched with shingles. |
Even with many visitors, one can imagine how peaceful and quiet this can be. |

Many streets are small in Kyoto. Sometimes, only pedestrians and bikes can pass. But having a small car is almost mandatory, depending where you live. |

Most of the temples are actually composed of many buildings, included actual temples and shrines (big or very small), warehouses, monasteries, shops (to sell charms, prayers and fortune-telling notes), etc. |
